FOB vs EXW: Importing Umbrella Bases from China

When you import umbrella bases from China, the trade term affects your unit cost, risk and freight planning.

EXW (Ex Works)

Under EXW, the factory price excludes local transport, export clearance and ocean freight. It looks cheapest, but you must arrange every step. EXW works well if you already have a freight forwarder in China.

FOB (Free On Board)

Under FOB, the umbrella base factory handles export clearance and delivery to the port. FOB is easier for first-time importers and makes comparing supplier quotes simpler because freight is quoted separately.

Container loading and MOQ

Because umbrella bases are heavy, container loading is usually the biggest cost driver. A 20-foot container may fit several hundred pieces depending on the model and packing. Common MOQ for OEM orders is 100-300 pieces, with lower trial-order quantities for stock designs.

Checklist before ordering

  • Confirm weight, dimensions and pole tube diameter.
  • Request FOB price, production lead time and port of loading.
  • Ask about certification, packaging and whether the base cover is included.
  • Use a bulk order sample first to check finish quality.
