Water-Fill Umbrella Bases: When to Use Them and Weight Limits
How water-fill bases work
Water-fill umbrella bases are hollow plastic or resin bases that you fill with water or sand after positioning. They ship light, which lowers freight cost and allows easy seasonal storage.
Typical weight limits
- Water-filled: a 30L base gives about 30kg
- Sand-filled: sand is roughly 1.5 times denser than water, giving about 45kg for the same volume
- Small patio umbrellas: up to 2.5m canopy in sheltered areas
When to use them
Water-fill bases suit residential patios, balconies, poolside tables and temporary events. They are not recommended for exposed restaurant terraces or large market parasols unless sand-filled and paired with a table.
Importing water-fill bases
Because empty resin bases nest or flat-pack well, they offer very efficient container loading. Ask the factory for nested packing quantity per 20ft and 40ft container.
